Storage times of breast milk

Breast milk is rich in nutrients which babies need for their healthy development.

To keep the milk healthy, you should observe the following storage times:

  • 2-3 hours unchilled
  • 48 hours in a fridge
  • 2 weeks in the freezing compartment of a fridge (**)
  • 3 months in a freezer (at the bottom/back) (***)
  • 6 months in a chest freezer (****)<i/>

These periods assume hygienic measures prior to expressing (wash hands, clean pump, suction kit and milk container). To treat the milk as gentle as possible, we recommend to thaw out the frozen milk at room temperature. Never thaw out in the microwave or hot water. Breast milk thawed out can be kept chilled in the fridge for 24 hours. Do not freeze the milk again. Breast milk does not necessarily need to have 37 °C when fed. Room temperature is adequate.
